Examiners
The Institute of Actuaries of India’s is seeking to appoint Fellows into the role of Examiners for Core Principles, Core Practices, Specialist Principles and Specialist Advanced level subjects. This opportunity is open to all Fellows, regardless of their location, subject to meeting the requirements set out below.
Role and Responsibility:
Examiners are appointed to help maintain the standards of the Institute of Actuaries of India (IAI) The requirements for this role are to: - help set up to a maximum of two exam papers each year in the agreed subject
- work as a team on the papers under the direction of the Review Examiner for the subject
- help produce agreed marking schedules (which include the solutions and the allocation of marks) and exam plans for each of the two exam papers
- amend exam materials (papers, marking schedules and exam plans), in the light of comments during the review process.
- keep aware of the current syllabus and Core Reading in each subject
- contribute, if required, to the annual review of the syllabus and Core Reading for each subject
- attend a marking conference call for the paper with which you are involved
- help review mark borderline scripts
- help agree the pass lists with the Review Examiner for the subject
- adhere to agreed time schedules for all parts of the exam process
- assist, if required, in the copying cases received and prepare required reports
- attend the Seminar/workshop for Examiners and Review Examiners
Support:
Administrative support for the role will be provided by the Examination Team of IAI.
Time Commitment/Timelines:
Exam Setting: This main activity takes place from January – March and July - Sepember. Exam Marking: Twice a year, May – June and November – December. As an Examiner you will mark the 5 sample scripts, attend the marking meeting 7 days following the exam and be available for third marking.
"Person" Specification:
As an Examiner for Regular Exams we are seeking support from Fellows of IAI who can demonstrate: - ability to work as part of a team
- an understanding of the IAI exams with two years experience of marking IAI or equivalent exams
- attention to detail and proof reading skills
- good time management
- in depth / practitioner knowledge of the subject areas.
- ability to meet strict deadlines
- knowledge of examination processes
Geographic location is not an issue.
This is a voluntary service and a fee will be paid. However, we recognise that the fee paid is nominal and we, as a profession, are therefore extremely grateful to, and reliant on, those members who provide this service to enhance and develop our profession.
Review Examiners
The Institute of Actuaries of India’s Education Committee is seeking to appoint Fellows into the role of Review Examiners for Core Principles, Core Practices, Specialist Principles and Specialist Advanced level subjects. This opportunity is open to all Fellows, regardless of their location, subject to meeting the requirements set out below.
Role and Responsibility:
The Role: Review Examiners are appointed by the IAI to help maintain the education and qualification standards of the Institute of Actuaries of India. This is a senior appointment and applicants must be able to show interest in and understanding of the IAI’s examination processes and procedures. The requirements for this role are to: - their own knowledge of the assigned subject syllabus and Core Reading is up to date
- contribute, if required, to the annual review of the syllabus and Core Reading for each subject
- the timetable for submission of draft exam materials (papers, marking schedules and exam plans) is agreed with the IAI Examination Department and adhered to
- proper arrangements are made for the consideration, by each member of the examining team, of draft questions, outline solutions, marking schedules and exam plans. A breakdown of the marks between knowledge, application and higher skills is produced/provided to help to ensure that the standard of the exams is maintained
- after discussion with the Examiners, a written sign-off is provided confirming that the procedures have been followed and that papers, marking schedules and exam plans are complete
- attend the conference call with the examiners
- at all stages of the marking the timetable laid down is being adhered to. Although the Review Examiner is not involved in the routine marking, he/she may need to assist personally to ensure that the programme deadlines are met. following the double marking full consideration is given to candidates falling in the borderline area of the pass mark, and to candidates with a discrepancy between the marks from the two Assistant Examiners
- standards are maintained between sessions, particularly if different Examiners an are marking each session
- exam results are submitted on the agreed deadline date
- the pass lists are signed off by the required deadline date
- attend the Seminar/workshop for Examiners and Review Examiners
Time Lines:
- Marking 5 sample scripts within a week of the exam.
- Reviewing all the marks which have been submitted.
- Attending the conference call with the examining team to discuss the marking exercise submissions.
This process will occur approximately twice in a year.

Exam Counselling
The Institute of Actuaries of India’s is seeking to appoint Fellows into the role of Counsellors for Core Principles, Core Practices, Specialist Principles and Specialist Advanced level subjects.
The Institute provides Counselling for students who have appeared at least once in its examinations but have not succeeded.
The service is offered to students who have failed their subjects in recent examination sessions. The aim of a counselling session is to help the candidate understand: - why he/she has failed the paper;
- how to improve his/her examination performance in specific Subject
- how to improve examination technique generally.
The session is intended to identify the candidates’ lack of preparation or exam technique that may have caused him/her problems and are likely to cause problems in the future. This is a voluntary service and a fee will be paid. However, we recognise that the fee paid is nominal and we, as a profession, are therefore extremely grateful to, and reliant on, those members who provide this service to enhance and develop our profession.
Actuary India Magazine
A: “The Actuary India” published monthly as a magazine since October, 2002, aims to be a forum for members of the Institute of Actuaries of India (the Institute) for; - Disseminating information,
- Communicating developments affecting the Institute members in particular and the actuarial profession in general,
- Articulating issues of contemporary concern to the members of the profession.
- Cementing and developing relationships across membership by promoting discussion and dialogue on professional issues.
- Discussing and debating issues particularly of public interest, which could be served by the actuarial profession,
- Student members of the profession to share their views on matters of professional interest by way of articles and write-ups.
- Articles of the interest of Students concerning about their examinations
B: The Institute recognizes the fact that; - there is a growing emphasis on the globalization of the actuarial profession;
- there is an imminent need to position the profession in a business context which transcends the traditional and specific actuarial applications.

Who are we looking for? : We are looking for Fellow/Affiliate members who have distinctive knowledge, expertise, understanding and strategic thinking in the required area/areas.
Time Commitment : Attendance at 4 – 6 meetings per annum and follow up on actions between meetings. Meetings are normally held in IAI office or through Conference call and usually last for 2 hours.
